The Head of the Department of Islamic Law, University of Ilorin, Prof. Azizat Omotoyosi Amoloye-Adebayo, has emphasised the pivotal role men should play in supporting feminism and achieving gender equity.

Speaking on a UNILORIN FM Programme, “Gender Lens”, anchored by Oluwadamilola Afelumo, last Wednesday, (January 21, 2026), Prof. Amoloye-Adebayo stressed that male involvement is crucial in raising self-aware and confident children.

“Men are needed for structure,” she said, highlighting the significance of male participation in fostering a balanced society.

She argued that feminism, though often perceived as a western concept, is a universal value that seeks to recognise and protect women’s rights.

Prof. Amoloye-Adebayo drew a distinction between gender equality and equity, advocating for the latter as it acknowledges the different roles and needs of genders. “Equality is a fact of creation, but equity is about recognising the different roles and needs of genders,” she explained.

The don further highlighted the imperative of collaboration between men and women to achieve gender equity, with men playing a crucial role in providing structure and support. Prof. Amoloye-Adebayo called for the recognition of the inherent equality of all humans and the importance of equitable roles in society.
