Members of the University of Ilorin community have been urged to prioritise cleanliness and maintain a beautiful environment by properly disposing of refuse.
This call was made by the Chairman of the University Environmental Maintenance Committee, Prof. Habeeb Adewale Ajimotokan, while fielding questions on a UNILORIN FM popular Yoruba programme, ‘Oro to n lo’, anchored by the Station Manager, Mr Idris Alooma.
Prof. Ajimotokan stressed the importance of keeping the University clean, highlighting the Committee’s efforts to maintain a clean and beautiful environment.
Pointing out that the Committee is responsible for cutting grasses and bushes, trimming flowers, cutting trees, and fumigating the University campuses, the don revealed plans to turn waste into wealth through renewable energy initiatives.
In addition to environmental sustainability, Prof. Ajimotokan discussed the plans of the University to transition to solar energy. He announced that the Department of Mechanical Engineering will soon be supplying the entire University with solar energy, building on the success of its existing solar-powered system.
The Professor of Mechanical Engineering also acknowledged the challenges facing universities in Nigeria, particularly in terms of funding. He shared his personal experience of developing a machine that produces pencils, but struggling to secure funding to mass-produce the product.
Despite these challenges, Prof. Ajimotokan expressed appreciation for the support of the University Management, led by Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN. He noted that the Management has provided necessary funding and resources to support the Committee’s initiatives.
The don also highlighted the efforts of the University to monitor and support its graduates, many of whom have gone on to achieve great successes. He cited examples of graduates who have given back to the University, such as Babs Omotowa, who built the NLNG facility for the Faculty of Engineering.
