An Associate Professor at the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies (CPSS), University of Ilorin, Dr. Ruth Abiola Adimula, has called on other Nigerian institutions to establish Centres for Peace Studies to address the root causes of conflicts and promote peaceful coexistence.

Speaking at a special  programme  on Peace and Conflict Resolutions on UNILORIN 89.3 FM last Tuesday (February 24, 2026) anchored by its General Manager, Mr Idris Alooma, Dr Adimula also emphasised the importance of interfaith dialogue and community engagement in achieving peace.

She cited the University of Ilorin Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies, which has a Mediation Room for alternative dispute resolutions, as a model for other institutions to emulate.

Dr Adimula, a lawyer and former Senior Special Adviser to the Kwara State Governor on Women’s Affairs, noted that Nigeria can learn from countries like Iceland, New Zealand, and Switzerland, which are ranked among the most peaceful countries in the world.

She identified factors contributing to conflicts globally, including armed conflicts, climate change, economic instability, governance failure, and forced displacement, citing countries like Colombia, Somalia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

She expressed appreciation to the University management led by Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, for its unwavering support for the CPSS.

Dr Adimula noted that the  efforts of the University have not only fostered a peaceful campus environment but they have also nurtured a positive relationship with the host community.

She also commended the University radio station for its peace advocacy efforts and stressed that community engagement is key to peace development in the Nigerian society.
