The Head of the Electricity Division of the Works Department, University of Ilorin, Mr Joseph Sunday Adebayo, has advised staff and students of the University against the promotion of energy wastage.

Mr Adebayo, who is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, gave this warning last Tuesday (February 10, 2026) while speaking with UNILORIN Bulletin in his office.

He described energy waste as the deliberate act of switching on light and electric appliances when not needed.

He explained that he has observed that some staff and students used to switch on light and other electric appliances where and when they are not required, particularly during the day.

Mr Adebayo, who is also a Fellow of the Nigerian Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, added that putting on light and electric appliances when not needed would lead to unnecessary accumulation of debt by the University as it would also reduce the lifespan of the bulbs.

He, therefore, encouraged staff and students to cultuvate the habit of putting off light and other appliances whenever they are not needed to enable the University safe money for other things.

While he said that the security light should be switched on when leaving the office and academic areas, Mr Adebayo explained that such should be turned off as soon as it is day break.
