The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has charged the Soil Science Society of Nigeria (SSSN) to use its 50th Annual Conference to develop policy initiatives capable of positively influencing government decisions and addressing challenges in the academic and professional sectors.
Prof. Egbewole stated this last Monday (October 6, 2026) when the leadership of the Society paid a courtesy visit to him ahead of its 50th Annual Conference, hosted by the University of Ilorin.

The Vice Chancellor described the Conference as an opportunity for the Society to move beyond academic discussions and produce outcomes with tangible impact on the Nigerian society. He expressed hope that the session would serve as a watershed by addressing issues affecting the academic and professional worlds and translate its deliberations into practical interventions.
Prof. Egbewole also urged the Society to develop policy recommendations that could be presented to government for adoption, stressing the need for academic and professional engagements to be appropriately reflected in public policy.

The Vice Chancellor commended the Society on choosing the University of Ilorin as the host of the landmark conference and expressed optimism that the event would contribute to the continued growth and development of the Society.
Earlier in his remarks, the President of the Society, Prof. Jibrin M. Jibrin, described the Conference as a significant milestone in the history of the Society, noting that although the Society is more than 50 years old, the 2026 gathering marked its 50th Annual Conference.
Prof. Jibrin said the Conference was not merely an avenue for presenting research findings and discussing scientific advancement, but also an opportunity for members to interact and set an agenda for the future of the profession.
While commending the University of Ilorin for accepting to host the Conference, he described the institution as an appropriate venue for the milestone event. The SSSN President appreciated Prof. Egbewole for the support extended to the Society, particularly for providing the support letter that facilitated the hosting of the Conference.

Prof. Jibrin said the level of support from the Vice Chancellor and the University management had given members confidence in the success of the event.
