The University of Ilorin has once again asserted its leadership in the Health Sciences as two of its distinguished scholars clinched top leadership positions in the newly established Scientific, Education and Training Committee (SETC) of the Physiological Society of Nigeria (PSN).
This is contained in a communique dated September 19, 2026, issued by the Executive Committee of the Society, a copy of which was made available to UNILORIN Bulletin.
According to the communique signed by the President of the Society, Prof. Samuel B. Olaleye, and its Secretary, Prof. Sunday Bisong, a former Dean of the Postgraduate School, University of Ilorin, Prof. B. V. Owoyele was appointed the Chairman (Convener) of the Committee, while Dr W. I. Abdulmajeed, also of the University, was appointed as the Secretary.
The 10-member Committee, comprising renowned young academics and researchers drawn from across the country, is saddled with advancing physiological sciences education, research standards and professional training pipelines. Its mandates include high-impact scientific and skill acquisition workshops, capacity-building seminars, clinical partnership support, grantsmanship and mentorship pipelines for early-career researchers and trainees.
Reacting to the development, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, welcomed the appointment.
He described it as well-deserved, meritorious and a source of immense pride to the University community.
Prof. Egbewole noted that the selection of the two scholars from UNILORIN to lead such a strategic organ of the PSN is a clear affirmation of the reputation of the University as a centre of academic excellence and a hub for high-impact research.
The Vice Chancellor charged Prof. Owoyele and Dr Abdulmajeed to see their appointments as a call to service and to continue to serve as worthy ambassadors of the University by bringing to bear the UNILORIN ethos of excellence, integrity and diligence in repositioning physiology education in Nigeria.
In separate interactions with UNILORIN Bulletin in their respective offices last Tuesday, (September 23, 2026), the two appointees expressed profound gratitude to the PSN for the confidence reposed in them.
Prof. Owoyele appreciated the PSN leadership for the honour and pledged to provide visionary and inclusive leadership that will strengthen physiological sciences education and create sustainable opportunities for young physiologists across the country.
On his part, Dr Abdulmajeed described the appointment as an honour not just to him personally, but to the Department and the University at large. He pledged his commitment to work assiduously with the Chairman and other members of the Committee to deliver on its core mandates, particularly in the areas of capacity building, grantsmanship and mentorship for early-career scholars.
