Unilorites attract water project to community

As part of their community development initiatives, students of the University of Ilorin who are currently pursuing M.Sc.Development Communication programme recently attracted a water project to the Odokoto Ayedade community in the Ilorin South Local Government Area of Kwara State.
This was disclosed last Thursday (August 27, 2026) by the Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences, Prof. Saudat Salah Abdulbaqi in a chat with UNILORIN Bulletin.
The Dean explained that the students, whose field exercise focussed on Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage (HWTS) at the community, were surprised to discover that Odokoto Ayedade did not have access to safe and reliable water for consumption.
Prof. Abdulbaqi, who is also a Council Member of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), added that the subsequent advocacy embarked upon by the students on the challenge attracted the attention of the Deputy Chief Whip of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Hon. Maryam Yusuf Aladi, who immediately swung into action by taking up the task of sinking a borehole water project for the community.
The Dean commended the students for their efforts as she explained that the attraction of the water project to the community is an important episode that would continue to be celebrated by the beneficiaries.
Prof. Abdulbaqi, who equally thanked the community for hosting the students and the donor for her prompt intervention, said that the impact created by the postgraduate students is in consonance with the essence of the University.
The Dean urged the community to ensure that the project when completed and handed over to them is protected for it to endure for their own benefit.
