After about six years hiatus, the University of Ilorin radio station, UNILORIN 89.3 FM, has bounced back to the global airwaves, with live streaming now restored on Radio Garden and five other major international broadcast platforms.
This was disclosed by the Director of Corporate Affairs, University of Ilorin, Mr Kunle Akogun, in a chat with UNILORIN Bulletin last Thursday (August 20, 2026).
He said that ‘‘the just concluded 37th Annual Conference and General Assembly of the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU), which proceedings were beamed live across the globe on the radio platform, provided a veritable opportunity to test-transmit the new broadcast feat.’’
UNILORIN FM pioneered 24-hour broadcasting in the North Central zone at its inception in 2009, and, in 2020, it became the first radio station in Kwara State to be listed on Radio Garden. The feat earned national media mentions and projected the voice of the University globally. A brief technical hitch later affected and truncated the online streaming.
However, with the recent intervention of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, the challenges were surmounted, opening a new chapter in campus radio broadcasting.
Mr Akogun said, ‘‘In addition to Radio Garden, UNILORIN FM is now streaming live on Mixlr, the University of Ilorin website, Online Radio Box, TuneIn, and will soon join Zeno FM. This brings the station’s global presence to about six platforms, with a target of 10 before the end of September 2026.”
The Director further confirmed the resumption of 24-hour transmission by the radio station.
He said, “While terrestrial broadcast runs from 7:00am to 7:00pm, online broadcast is now round-the-clock”, pointing out that “the recent installation of solar power at the radio station by the University management has ensured that the 24-hour online transmission is possible and sustainable.”
Mr Akogun credited the full restoration to the commitment of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, whose support and funding ensured that live streaming was restored and prominently placed on the university website.
He said UNILORIN FM would not relent in serving the University community and humanity through rich, socially responsible content.
The station’s Dress Code, Anti-Flood, and Fire Disaster jingles have won national awards. Since 2009, the station has never been sanctioned by Nigeria’s broadcast regulatory body, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC.) It has also trained over 5,000 student volunteers, corps members, and freelance broadcasters, many of whom are now industry leaders and Guinness World Record holders.
The Director appreciated the support of the University management, led by Prof. Egbewole, the immediate past Director of Computer Services and Information Technology Directorate (COMSIT), Prof. Rasheed Jimoh, the Chairman of the UNILORIN FM Board, Prof. Jeleel Ojuade, the General Manager, Mr Idris Alooma, as well as Heads of Units, especially the Head of Programmes, Mr Temitope Olawuyi (Karitalk), whose technical wizardry mostly facilitated the smooth return to the global platform. He also appreciated other staff members, students, volunteers, regular callers, and loyal listeners.
Mr Akogun added, “We will continue to work hard, innovate, and create contents that increase the visibility of the station and achieve the vision of our founding fathers: training future broadcasters, promoting functional education, and projecting the good image of the University to support its ranking, unity, and peaceful coexistence.”
