The immediate past Dean of the Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, Prof. Lasiele Alabi Yahaya, has emphasised the significance of mentorship in the career and general development of young people in order to ensure their success and general human development.

Prof. Yahaya, who is also a former Director of the UNILORIN Counseling and Human Development Centre, stated this last Tuesday (August 4, 2026) in an interview with UNILORIN Bulletin in his office.

The don said that when young persons have elders they look up to for emulation and support, attaining progress in life would be smoother for such individuals.

Prof.Yahaya enjoined students to be deliberate and meticulous in the choice of mentors and ensure that they pattern their lives in accordance to their desires.

The don, who also served as the Director of the Institute of Education, University of Ilorin, recalled that he attained the level he is in his career through the support he enjoyed from distinguished intellectual elders who guided his steps.

He also encouraged parents and guardians to assist their children by attaching them to successful and well-meaning individuals who would help them to develop themselves.

Speaking on other issues, Prof. Yahaya, who is currently on sabbatical leave at Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, stressed the need to uphold morality, particularly among young citizens.

He said that any form of training or level education and concomitant academic qualifications obtained which are  devoid of morality would lead the holders to perversion and even endanger the society.

The former Dean urged teachers and parents to take more interests in the character development of their children and wards as much as they do on their academic learning.

Prof. Yahaya said that learning and character must be simultaneously imbibed to ensure healthy development of individuals and the larger society, saying that certificates of higher learning are  always issued after the institutions are satisfied with the quality character and level of learning of graduands.
