UNILORIN Statistics Dept. best in Nigeria-Bamiduro

A retired Professor of Statistics at the University of Ibadan, Timothy Adebayo Bamiduro, has described the Department of Statistics, University of Ilorin as second to no none in Nigeria.

Prof. Bamiduro stated this last Tuesday (July 28, 2026) while making his remarks at the 10th International Conference of the Professional Statisticians’ Society of Nigeria (PSSN) held at the University Auditorium.

He said that the Department is blessed with highly resourceful personnel who  are busy building great statisticians for national aand human development.

Prof. Bamiduro, who was honoured with the Fellowship of the PSSN at the event, explained that the Department had produced highly respected and impactful academics who are teaching Statistics in other universities, including the University of Ibadan.

He added that, apart from the production of versatile University academics, the Department has equally produced teachers who are training upcoming professionals in other institutions of higher learning as well as many other statisticians who are working in other establishments.

The 81 year-old retired don said that he would remain proud of the Department and the University of Ilorin as he recalled that he taught Statistics at the University on part-time basis when it was newly established over 50 years ago.

Speaking earlier, the President of the PSSN, Prof. Waheed Babatunde Yahya, described the honouree as one of the unsung heroes of the profession in Nigeria.

Prof. Yahya said that Prof. Bamiduro was one of those who built the profession to what it is today, noting that despite his advanced age, the honouree has continued to serve as a teacher, public speaker and role-model to younger compatriots across and beyond Nigeria.

He added that the Society decided to honour Prof. Bamiduro in recognition of his lifetime contributions to the development of the PSSN, the nation and humanity at large.

The event, which attracted distinguished Statisticians from all over Nigeria and beyond, was attended by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, and other Principal Officers of the University as well as traditional rulers and students from the University of Ilorin and sister institutions of higher learning across Kwara State.
