UNILORIN Cadet Corps canvasses vigilance on campus

The Cadet Corps, UNILORIN Command, has called for renewed commitment to security consciousness and proactive vigilance as part of activities marking its 2026 Cadet Week celebration.

The event,  held penultimate Thursday(June 11,2026) with the theme “The Vanguard: Restoring Pride, Rebuilding Excellence”, featured security checks, visitations, a Durbar procession, gyration event, sports and recreational activities, culminating in a grand endurance walk aimed at promoting teamwork, discipline, leadership and community engagement, among cadets.

Delivering the keynote address on behalf of the NSCDC Commandant, Mr O.S. Oyewole, described the summit theme as timely, stressing that Nigeria’s current security realities require a new approach to vigilance and preparedness.

According to him, threats confronting the country have evolved significantly, with terrorism, cybercrime, drug abuse, attacks on critical infrastructure and sophisticated criminal networks posing serious challenges to national security.

He noted that vigilance in today’s world extends beyond physical security, adding that intelligence gathering, digital literacy, community trust and rapid response have become essential components of modern security architecture.

Also speaking, ASP Femi Rotimi of the Nigeria Police Force, Kwara State Command, who spoke on “Rejuvenating Vigilance in an Evolving Environment”, emphasised that vigilance is no longer passive observation but an active commitment to awareness, preparedness and responsible action in response to emerging security threats.

He identified cybercrime, cultism, kidnapping, terrorism, fraud, misinformation and drug abuse as major threats requiring constant public alertness.

The Deputy Director of the University Security Division, Mr  Suberu  Ibrahim, who conveyed goodwill messages from the Acting Director of the Division, Mr Paul Ogidi, praised the Corps for consistently supporting campus security efforts. He also commended the current Administration for revitalising the image of the Command.

Similarly, the Sub-Dean of the Student Affairs Division, Dr Rasheed Onagun, who represented the Ag. Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Alex Akanmu, applauded the Corps for its dedication to maintaining discipline and law and order, encouraging officers to sustain their commitment towards institutional safety.

Earlier, in his welcome address, the Commanding Officer of the Cadet Corps UNILORIN Command, Cadet Major V.O. Adewumi, reaffirmed the commitment of the Command to restoring excellence, strengthening discipline and rebuilding the image of the Corps.

Highlights of the event were interactive educational session on situational vigilance, questions and answers, and a silent drill display by the Cadet Police led by Cadet Second Lieutenant O.R. Naingba, and presentation of the awards of recognition to some individuals.
