UNILORIN to promote excellence through academic contests

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has reaffirmed the commitment of the University to sustaining its culture of academic excellence and intellectual competition, describing quiz and debate activities as vital platforms for identifying and nurturing outstanding student talents.
Prof. Egbewole made this known last Tuesday (June 9, 2026) at the University Auditorium while declaring open the final leg of theĀ Inter-Faculty Quiz and Debate Competition.
He noted that the annual event has become an enduring tradition that continues to project the University positively within and outside Nigeria.
The Vice Chancellor observed that the University has not only sustained the competition over the years but has also recorded remarkable achievements at national and international levels.
According to him, the contest further demonstrates theĀ determination of the University to maintain its leading position among higher institutions through the promotion of intellectual engagement and healthy academic rivalry.
Prof. Egbewole congratulated all participating students and described them as winners irrespective of the final outcome.
He stressed that success in such contests goes beyond winning trophies, noting that participants had already distinguished themselves through their courage to compete and showcase their intellectual abilities.
He also urged the leadership of the Quiz and Debate Committee of the University to identify outstanding participants across all Faculties and create a platform for continuous interaction and mentorship.
He expressed confidence that such an initiative would strengthen the University’s future representation at inter-university competitions and further consolidate its reputation for excellence.
In his remarks, the Ag. Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Alex Morenikeji Akanmu, commended the students for their enthusiasm and commitment, noting that the event has consistently served as a breeding ground for exceptional debaters and quiz champions within the University.
Dr Akanmu disclosed that contestants from 16 Faculties initially participated in the competition, with eight progressing to the advanced stages. He listed the qualifying Faculties as Clinical Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Law, Life Sciences, Education, Basic Medical Sciences, Engineering, and Communication and Information Sciences.
Dr Akanmu, who is also the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ilorin Branch, described all participating Faculties as winners for reaching such a highly competitive stage, noting that answering challenging questions before a large audience requires courage, preparation, and intellectual depth.
At the end, the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences came first while the Faculty of Law emerged as the runner-up as the Faculty of Education came third.
