Benchers’ appointment: A new peak in Egbewole’s trailblazing trajectory

For a University already generally acknowledged as the most sought-after and widely celebrated as “Better by Far,” the recent appointment of its Vice Chancellor into the prestigious Body of Benchers is yet another resounding affirmation of the University of Ilorin’s unmistakable march of excellence. It is also a deeply personal milestone for Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, whose career has been defined by a historical proclivity for breaking new grounds.

Being appointed into the eminent Body of accomplished legal icons is one of the highest recognitions in Nigeria’s legal profession. The appointment marks another significant milestone in a career already distinguished by a string of historic firsts, and further cements the reputation of UNILORIN as a citadel of excellence.

The Body of Benchers is the highest regulatory authority for the legal profession in Nigeria. Established under the Legal Practitioners Act, it is responsible for the formal Call to the Bar of persons seeking to become legal practitioners, and for the disciplining of erring lawyers. Its membership is drawn from the bench, the bar, and academia, and is reserved for legal practitioners of the highest distinction and integrity. Appointment to the Body is, therefore, not just an honour — it is a recognition of outstanding contribution to legal education, legal practice, and the judiciary. That is the unique Body into which Prof. Egbewole and another UNILORIN Law teacher, Prof. Joshua Olatoke, SAN, were appointed.
