Study sciences, build successful strategic minds— Aderinto
By Mustafa Abubakar
A Professor at the Department of Mathematics, University of Ilorin, Yidiat O. Aderinto, has emphasised that the study of science-based disciplines would always equip students with strategic thinking, analytical skills, and discipline required for success in today’s competitive global environment.
Prof. Aderinto disclosed this last Wednesday (April 15, 2026) while speaking with UNILORIN Bulletin in her office.
The don explained that disciplines such as Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Statistics, Industrial Chemistry, Geology, and Geophysics collectively train the mind to think logically, solve complex problems, and make informed decisions, noting that these skills are critical for addressing real-world challenges.
She stressed that Mathematics remains the foundation upon which other sciences are built, describing it as the language that underpins scientific reasoning and precision across all fields.
According to her, the study of Mathematics particularly sharpens the ability to analyse problems critically, break them into simpler components, and apply appropriate methods to arrive at accurate solutions.
She noted that strategic planning, much like solving a mathematical problem, requires clarity of purpose, proper sequencing of steps, and efficient use of available resources to achieve defined goals.
Prof. Aderinto added that effective personal development involves key components such as vision setting, self-assessment, networking, implementation, and personal branding, which she likened to applying tested formulas and principles to achieve reliable outcomes.
She further emphasised the need for students to balance personal branding, technical proficiency, and psychological resilience in order to remain competitive and adaptable in today’s evolving world.
She also advised students to shun negative behaviours such as truancy, examination malpractice, drug abuse, cultism, and internet fraud, noting that such actions contradict the values of precision, integrity, and diligence that science, particularly Mathematics, represents.
The don added that just as every correct solution in Mathematics follows a logical process, success in life occurs when preparation meets opportunity.
Prof. Aderinto, therefore, encouraged students to remain committed to continuous self-development and excellence.
