The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has commended members of the institution’s 1991 medical set for their steadfast commitment and continued contributions to the growth and development of their alma mater.

Prof. Egbewole, gave this commendation last Thursday (April 9, 2026) while receiving members of the set, who paid him a courtesy visit in his office prior to commissioning a solar powered borehole project donated by the set.

Represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), Prof. Muhtar Adeiza Etudaiye, the Vice Chancellor praised the group for their thoughtful interventions, noting that their efforts in assessing and addressing the needs of the institution demonstrate a deep sense of responsibility and attachment to the University.

He remarked that the global spread and professional accomplishments of members of the set reflect the quality of training they received at the University, adding that their sustained relationship with the University remains invaluable.

Speaking earlier, the President of the set, Dr Edwin Ozua, said the visit was both a reunion and an opportunity to give back to the institution that shaped their careers. He noted that although members of the class graduated 35 years ago and are now spread across Nigeria and beyond, the values and training they received at the University remain foundational to their professional lives.

Dr Ozua explained that the set’s latest intervention, which is the donation of a 10,000-litre solar-powered borehole was informed by a Needs Assessment conducted in collaboration with the College of Health Sciences.

He added that the project is designed to improve access to water for students, enhance hygiene, support better time management, and ultimately contribute to improved academic performance and quality of life.

The President also outlined several previous contributions of the set, including the donation of a high-fidelity medical manikin and the establishment of an audio-visual room, which laid the foundation for the College’s Skills Laboratory. He added that the set later supported the facility with additional infrastructure and earned recognition from the University, including the dedication of a room in their honour.

Other interventions by the group include the installation of solar panels to support power supply for teaching facilities, financial contributions to the University’s 50th Anniversary Endowment Fund, and sponsorship of the College’s subscription to an international network of medical schools to enhance global best practices in medical education.

Dr Ozua further noted that beyond infrastructure, members of the class have contributed significantly in human capital, with many serving as Professors, administrators, and leaders within the University. He cited several members who currently occupy key academic and administrative positions across departments in the College of Health Sciences.

While reaffirming their commitment to sustained support for the institution, Dr Ozua stated that their interventions are guided by a philosophy of making meaningful and lasting impact. He also appreciated the University management and the leadership of the Alumni Association for providing an enabling environment for alumni contributions.

The Vice Chancellor’s representative, in company with Principal Officers and members of the 1991 set,  later commissioned the solar-powered borehole project at the Old College of Health Sciences to the applause of management, staff and students of the College who all trooped out to witness the historic event.
