Take advantage of FG’s laureate prize, Onuora-Oguno urges Unilorites

A former Head of the Department of Jurisprudence and International Law, University of Ilorin, Prof. Azubike Chinwuba Onuora-Oguno, has urged students of the Better by far University to take advantage of the newly introduced National Laureate prize to catalyse their ambition of becoming great scholars and professionals.

Prof. Onuora-Oguno made this appeal last Wednesday (April 1, 2026) in a chat with UNILORIN Bulletin.

The don, who commended the Federal Government on introducing another wonderful initiative that would see to winners going home with various sums of money, said that the institutionalisation of the prize would achieve its intention of recognising and rewarding exceptional academic research in tertiary institutions.

Prof. Onuora-Oguno said that with the calibre of students of the University he was very optimistic that many of them would win the prize.

The Federal Government had in a statement issued last  Tuesday(March 31, 2026) by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Education, Mr Boriowo Folasade,  announced the launch of the Nigeria National Laureate Annual Prize Programme, which awards up to N20 million to students whose dissertations and theses demonstrate outstanding intellectual and commercial potential.

The statement explained that “Undergraduate dissertation winners will receive a minimum of N5m, master thesis winners will receive N10m, while doctoral thesis winners will be awarded N20m, alongside national recognition befitting their scholarly contributions.”
