The immediate past Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management Services), University of Ilorin, Prof. Suleiman Folorunsho Ambali, hasĀ  warned against the growing threats posed by emerging chemical contaminants, calling for urgent action to protect human health and the environment.

Delivering a plenary lecture last Monday (February 9, 2026) at the just concluded 3rd Biennial Conference of the Forum of Nigerian Toxicologists (FONTOX) held at the former Senate Chamber, Old Faculty of Arts, University of Ilorin.

Prof. Ambali, who is a renowned expert in environmental toxicology, highlighted the complex challenges posed by microplastics, PFAS, and antimicrobial resistance, among other emerging threats.

“Today, we face not only single poisons at defined doses, but complex chemical cocktails at chronic low concentrations,” Prof. Ambali warned, saying that “our world has changed so fundamentally that even the foundational axiom of toxicology – ‘the dose makes the poison’ – demands re-examination.

He emphasised the need for a proactive approach, highlighting the importance of Green Toxicology, Artificial Intelligence, and community engagement in addressing these challenges.

Prof. Ambali stressed that “toxicological capacity is not a luxury, but a prerequisite for sustainable development, particularly in Africa, saying”, “We must work together to protect human health and environmental integrity from chemical harm.”

The expert highlighted the need for stronger regulatory frameworks, improved research infrastructure, and increased investment in toxicological science.

“We stand at the intersection of Chemistry and Biology, of environment and health, of science and policy,” Prof. Ambali said, pointing out that “we must be equal to this moment as our world, our continent, our nation, and our children depend upon it.”

Prof. Ambali, who also served as Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, called on governments, industries, and civil society groups to take urgent action to address the growing threats posed by emerging chemical contaminants.
