The Director of the Physical Planning Unit, University of Ilorin, Mr Abdulrahaman Toyin Jimoh, has described the newly commissioned JAMB Merit Award Hostel in the University as a symbolic project that would boost student accommodation on campus.
Mr Jimoh stated this last Wednesday, (December 3, 2025), while speaking during the handing over of the project held at the project site. “The provision of the hostel was based on a merit award, considering the University of Ilorin as the most sought-after university, in terms of academic excellence and stability in academic activities, paved the way for the realisation of this symbolic project on our campus,” he said.
The Director thanked the management of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) headed by a former Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Emeritus Is-haq Oloyede, for facilitating this project. He said that the project would encourage more collaborations between the University and JAMB for mutual benefits.
The Director commended the contractor, Ayeloja Engineering Limited, for a good job welldone, describing him as a very passionate and committed man.
Mr Jimoh assured the contractor that the use of the hostel will be test-run from December 2025 to June 2026, and in July during the rainy season, to confirm if there are any leakages in any room of the hostel. He stated that the contractor will be responsible for restoration if any issues arise.
He warned the students against using heavy equipment that could trigger electrical sparking and tampering with any electrical fault detected. Instead, they should report to the Dean of Students, who would call the contractor for necessary action.
In his remarks, the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Alex Morenikeji Akanmu, who was represented by a Sub-Dean, Dr. Oluwatosin B. Igbayiloye, thanked JAMB for the provision of the project, which, he said came at the right time, particularly now that the students have just resumed. This, she said, would help address accommodation issues on campus, stressing that it is not just a room but self-contained accommodations that are satisfactory.
“The provision of the solar panel, pump machine, fire extinguishers, with this magnificent building, the management of the University under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, thanked Emeritus Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, whom Allah has used to get this done,” he said.
He stressed that this standard will encourage others to partner with the University and ease accommodation problems on campus. The Dean assured the University that the project will be well managed and the students would make proper use of it.
