By Adewole Muizdeen

The Vice Chancellor of the African School of Economics (the Pan-African University of Excellence)(ASE), Abuja, Prof. Mahfouz A. Adedimeji, has called on members of the University community to always uphold character, competence, and courage as the institution celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Speaking on a UNILORIN FM’s programme “Countdown to Unilorin @50”, co-anchored by the Station Manager, Mr Idris Alooma, and the Head of Programmes, Mr Temitope Olawuyi, penultimate Wednesday, (29th October, 2025), Prof. Adedimeji described the milestone as “very significant” and praised the University’s remarkable growth and transformational impact on humanity.

He noted that ‘‘50 years in the life of an institution is a significant achievement, and it’s exciting that the University of Ilorin has performed marvelously beyond its age, representing a momentous period of growth, development, and impact on humanity.’’

Prof. Adedimeji credited the University for shaping his character and learning, saying, “When you remove UNILORIN from my trajectory, I think there will be nothing left.”

He urged the University community to celebrate the anniversary by deepening the 3Cs: character, competence, and courage. “Character is sacrosanct; we must do the right thing, at the right time, and in the right way,” he said.

Prof. Adedimeji stated that competence is key to academic excellence and that courage will drive the community to do what is right despite many challenges.

The Vice Chancellor, who has served the University in various capacities including as Head of the Directorate of Corporate Affairs, emphasised the reason why alumni should give back to the University through good representation, financial contributions, and mentoring.
