The Postgraduate Students’ Association of the University of Ilorin (POGSASS) has held a leadership retreat aimed at fostering teamwork, promoting unity, and instilling values that uphold credible student governance.
The retreat, which took place last Tuesday, (September 23, 2025), at the University Auditorium Basement, brought together executives and members of the Association for lectures and discussions that centered on leadership ethics and accountability.
Delivering the keynote lecture, Dr Bilqis Wuraola Alatishe Muhammad, a consultant and lecturer at the Department of Epidemiology and Community Health, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, who spoke on the theme “Integrity, Accountability and Transparency”, urged student leaders to uphold ethical standards.
She also stressed that accountability is the foundation of trust.
“Without accountability, there can be no trust. Take charge and take responsibility,” she said.
Dr Muhammad further advised the student leaders to acknowledge mistakes, express genuine regret when necessary, and take steps to make things right.
“Don’t ever promise more than you can deliver, but always deliver more than you promise. Integrity, accountability, and transparency are non-negotiables for credible leadership,” she added.
Also speaking, Mr Muritala Ridwan Atanda, an educator and researcher, urged the new leaders to translate campaign pledges into measurable goals and focus on both immediate achievements and long-term plans.
“Periodic communication with your members will strengthen trust,” he advised.
In his remarks, Dr Olusola Yemi Tosin of the Department of Religions, University of Ilorin, charged the Executive Committee Members to work in harmony, reminding them that their conduct would be closely observed.
“You can’t get it right if you don’t do it right. Know what your office is all about,” he cautioned.
Earlier, the POGSASS President, Mr Akeem Abiodun Kuranga, expressed gratitude to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, and his entire management team for their continued support to postgraduate students.
He commended the guest speakers for their insights and assured members that the lessons from the retreat would be put to practice.
