UNILORIN Alumni Spotlight is on Afeez Otun – Class of 2016!

Afeez Akanni Otun is a distinguished scholar pursuing a PhD in Arabic Literature and Criticism at King Khalid University, Saudi Arabia. 

Notably, in 2025, Afeez made history by becoming the first person to interpret the Arafat Khutbah into Yoruba under the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s official arrangement, earning international recognition. 

Born in Iwo, Osun State, Nigeria in 1994, Afeez’s academic journey is marked by numerous accolades, including two Master’s degrees with distinction and a First-Class Honours degree in Arabic from the University of Ilorin.

Afeez’s educational background combines Islamic and Western studies, having memorized the Qur’an at Alfitrat Islamic Institute and graduating with distinction from Islahudeen Arabic School, Iwo. His expertise extends beyond academia, with professional experience in writing, translation, and media. He served as Special Assistant on Media in Osun State and taught Arabic Prosody and Translation at the University of Ilorin.

A member of the Nigerian Institute of Translators and Interpreters (NITI) and the Nigerian Centre for Arabic Research, Afeez has authored several publications and the book “The Garment of the Omnipotent”.
