Alabi shares tips on communication skills

By Temitope Omoniyi

In a bid to empower young leaders with effective communication skills, an Assistant Director in the Directorate of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Oluwasegun Alabi, has shared valuable insights on effective communication and presentation skills at the JCI Kwara Protem Public Speaking Academy.

At an online lecture titled “Mastering the Lectern”, penultimate weekend, Mr Alabi focused on helping participants overcome stage fright and deliver powerful presentations.

Mr Alabi, who is also the Protocol Officer to the Vice Chancellor, emphasised the importance of audience analysis, noting that understanding the needs of the audience is crucial to tailoring a speech effectively.

He also highlighted common errors to avoid in speech making and stressed the need for speakers to be sensitive to their audience’s reactions.

According to Mr. Alabi, who recently celebrated anchoring 100 inaugural lectures of the University, public speaking can be daunting, but with adequate preparation, anyone can deliver a compelling presentation.

He categorised public speaking as a form of group communication, emphasising that a public speaker is, in essence, a communicator.

The lecture covered various aspects of communication studies, including the mechanics of communication, types of communication, and approaches to public speaking. Participants also learned about different types of speeches, navigating speech types, and modes of presentation to overcome stage fright.

The event, attended by members of JCI Kwara Protem led by its Presiding Officer, Raliat Kofoworola Oke, was aimed at equipping participants with the skills and confidence needed to excel in public speaking.
