The University of Ilorin advocacy group, ‘UNILORIN Advocates’, has announced a series of activities to promote the institution during its upcoming 50th anniversary celebrations.
The group, which is comprised of accomplished alumni, was unveiled by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, SAN, in 2024 to increase visibility and advance the university’s values, achievements, and interests globally.
In a chat with UNILORIN Bulletin last Tuesday (September 9, 2025), a member of UNILORIN Advocates, Mr Seun Awogbenle, said, “as part of that effort, we have outlined a number of activities towards the 50th anniversary celebrations in recognition of the momentous occasion”.
According to him, “The activities include the 50th Anniversary Challenge, X-Space with the Vice Chancellor moderated by the Advocates, a career and employability fireside chat, promotional video and other strategic interventions that highlight the University as a symbol of what is possible within Nigeria’s tertiary education system.”
Mr Awogbenle hinted that the X-space, which would be held on Sunday, October 5, is the first that would be recorded of a Vice-Chancellor of any university in Nigeria and would be a bold statement on the commitment of the University to digital transformation and how it is fully leveraging social media to engage a wider audience.
“The UNILORIN Anniversary Challenge is a social media campaign for students and alumni to share their University of Ilorin story using the hashtag #UnilorinAt50. The best videos from students after careful review would be rewarded with prizes. The campaign would last for the month of October”, Mr Awogbenle stated.
While expressing hope that efforts of UNILORIN Advocates will go a long way to raise awareness around the celebrations for local and global audience, he said, “The promotional video and other strategic media interventions would tell a unique story and highlight the University’s strong pedigree and its ability to lead the innovation of the future and create the human capital that would drive the growth”.
The upcoming Golden Jubilee celebration of the University of Ilorin, scheduled to hold between 23rd and 28th November, 2025, will mark 50 years of excellence in education, research, and community impact of the institution since its establishment in 1975.
