UNILORIN Management calls for nomination
By Abubakar Imam
As part of the activities lined up for the 50th anniversary celebrations of the University of Ilorin, the management of the University has called for nomination of deserving individuals for awards to mark the milestone.
The Director of the University Advancement Centre, Prof. W. R. Yahya, made the request in a memo addressed to the Provost, Deans, and Directors, a copy which was made available to UNILORIN Bulletin.
The Director, who teaches at the Department of Statistics, said that the University is in the process of collating the list of distinguished alumni of the institution across the Faculties, Institutes and Centres for the second phase of alumni recognitions and awards.
He said that those to be nominated should be derived from the pool of eminent alumni who have distinguished themselves in their various fields for further processing.
Prof. Yahya, who also chairs a Sub-committee on the Anniversary Alumni Day, said that the nomination should contain the names, phone numbers and designations/status of the proposed honourees.
Other information expected, according to Prof. Yahya, are contact addresses and brief remarks on each of the nominees.
The Director said that Heads of Departments should forward their departmental nominees to the Deans of their various Faculties for central collation. This, according to him, would thereafter be submitted to the Centre through e-mail address: advancement@unilorin.edu.ng on or before Friday, September 19, 2025.
Speaking at a meeting of his Sub-Committee held last Thursday (September 4, 2025) in his office, Prof. Yahya explained that the expected nominees should be those who have kept the flag of the University flying in their respective communities, organisations, states, the nation and even at the international level.
He added that those who have offered one form of support or the other to their various Departments, Faculties and the University at large should be prioritised.
Prof. Yahya also pointed out that the honour is not only for the alumni but also extends to staff members, either serving or retired, with records of monumental contributions as it also covers others who neither attended the University nor worked there but have contributed significantly either through donation of buildings, facilities or endowment.
He added that the upcoming anniversary is for all as everybody is expected to play one role or the other to ensure the success of the anniversary celebration.
To herald the upcoming anniversary, the University had on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, honoured 64 outstanding individuals and groups in appreciation of their individual and collective contributions towards the progress and development of the University.
Among those honoured at the colourful ceremony held at the University Auditorium were distinguished captains of industry, prominent traditional rulers, outstanding professionals, impactful academics and several other categories of individuals from all walks of life.
As encompassing as the beneficiaries of the honour was, the University discovered that many other deserving individuals and groups were unintentionally left out.
The Committee subsequently decided to recommend more of the deserving alumni and benefactors of the University for honour as a way of appreciating their support and contributions, which aided the progress of the University in the last 50 years and made it one of the most influential and impactful institutions of higher learning at national and international levels.
