ANUDC: Participants hail UNILORIN, share experiences

Felicia Samuel and Bashirat Akinola The 12th edition of the All-Nigeria Universities Debating Championship (ANUDC), which brought together about 30 tertiary institutions across the country, has left participants with memorable impressions about  the University of Ilorin, the third-time host of the epoch-making event.

The week-long tournament blended intellectual exchange with social experiences, leaving participants with lasting impressions of UNILORIN and the programme. From infrastructure to hospitality, many students described UNILORIN as a “better by far” institution, praising both the campus environment and the organisation of the championship.

These were the views of some of the participants as captured by UNILORIN Bulletin last Thursday (August 28, 2025).

Adenike Hephzibah from the Federal University of Technology, Akure, praised the “big campus and nice restaurants,” describing the programme as both educational and inspirational.

She added that the competition had broadened her perspective and provided her with new ideas on how to improve her debating skills, while also allowing her to connect with people from diverse backgrounds.

Also commenting, Kikachukwu Okekuoyen of Ambrose Alli University said the serene environment and impressive structures of the University added to the rich learning he gained from the competition.

He noted further that the experience of meeting top debaters from other universities had challenged him to set higher academic and personal goals.

On his part, Gideon Joel, from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, noted that “the school is a very big one, it looks like a whole city on its own,” adding that exposure to the debating was “an ultimate experience.”

Joel explained that the opportunity to sharpen his debating and critical thinking skills in such a well and organised setting was something he would forever value.

In his remarks, Joshua from Crawford University, Igbesa, Ogun State, appreciated the beauty and hospitality of the host University, stating that “the atmosphere is peaceful, the people are receptive, and I’ve made friends beyond the tournament.”

He said that such friendships and networks were essential for students, as they build bonds that extend beyond academics into lifelong partnerships.

While commenting, Biodun Samson from the University of Uyo said he was fascinated by the “neat and well-kept buildings,” describing the experience as inspiring.

He explained that UNILORIN’s clean and organised environment created a conducive setting for intellectual development and meaningful social interactions.

Sapphire Mclaniyi of the University of Ibadan admired the trees, sitting areas, and “soothing entrance” into the campus, stressing that the debates were thrilling.

She added that the calmness of the campus complemented the intellectual rigour of the debates, making the entire event both relaxing and mentally stimulating.

In her submission, Mercy Igbokwe of the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, described the debating experience as enlightening, saying, “It stretches your mind and you come with one perspective and then encounter others you never thought about.”

She further stated that the exposure would help her apply fresh perspectives to her academic work and improve her ability to analyse issues critically.

While speaking, Yohanna Isahku from Borno State University described the championship as “a growth opportunity” that pushed him to think critically and apply academic knowledge to real world problems.

He emphasised that the skills gained during the programme would serve as a foundation for future leadership roles both within and outside the University.

In his remarks, Felix Gospel of Abia State University observed that the motto “Better by far” was truly reflected, adding that he had met people who motivated him to improve.

He explained that such motivation was priceless because it inspired students to strive for excellence not only in debating but in every aspect of their academic life.

While commenting, Okorimuna Victory from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, emphasised that “debating gives youth the chance to speak out and find solutions,” describing the platform as vital for society.

He explained that the programme nurtures active citizens who will contribute positively to nation building through constructive dialogue.

In his remarks, Samuel Isaac of the Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, said, “This is my second time here, and UNILORIN is doing a good job. Hosting three times means there’s something special about this school.”

He added that repeated hosting showed a strong culture of academic excellence at UNILORIN, which other institutions could emulate.

While speaking, Mahmud Hakeem from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) said UNILORIN was “far more beautiful” than he had imagined, and praised the programme for building students’ capacity in unique ways.

He further explained that being part of such a national gathering helped to develop teamwork, confidence, and intellectual boldness.

In his remarks, Adeolu Church from the University of Medical Sciences said the school was well structured, and the competition was enriching.

He added that the interactions and exposure to new ideas would help him become a more versatile debater and a better student.

While commenting, Joan Heart of Veritas University, Abuja, appreciated the warm reception of the hosts and noted that the national championship was always exciting, with UNILORIN living up to expectations.

She added that her experience in Ilorin had rekindled her passion for debating and inspired her to mentor others when she returned to her university.

Also commenting, Rukayya Abbas Yusuf from Veritas University said the size and standard of infrastructure at UNILORIN were impressive, describing her first visit as refreshing.

She further observed that being part of such a large campus community gave her the opportunity to explore and learn from different perspectives.

In his own remarks, Chukwuma Noble of Abia State University declared that Unilorin is truly “Better by far,” noting that the programme expanded his knowledge.

He said the competition had helped him develop analytical and persuasive communication skills, which would be useful throughout his career.

While commenting, Adamu Shuwa Bashar from Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, said the university’s infrastructure was beyond his expectations, and that the repeat hosting demonstrated UNILORIN’s uniqueness.

He added that the warm welcome from the organisers made his experience more memorable and encouraging.

 The reflections of these students captured the spirit of ANUDC at UNILORIN, an inspiring intellectual journey hosted in a University admired for its size, structures, hospitality, and commitment to academic excellence.
