The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has commended the leadership of the University’s Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on its initiative in organising a workshop aimed at training and retraining its members.
Prof. Egbewole gave the commendation last Monday (August 11, 2025) while receiving members of the Executive Committee of the UNILORIN NUJ Chapel and some of its members in his office. The delegation was at the Vice Chancellor’s office to brief him on the forthcoming workshop, themed “Journalism in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Challenges and Opportunities”, scheduled to hold from September 8 to 9, 2025.
While congratulating members of the new Executive Committee of the Chapel, the Vice Chancellor, who is also the Secretary-General of the Association of West African Universities (AWAU), explained the need for enhanced publicity of the activities of the University. He expressed optimism that the Union would give proper attention to the coverage, reportage, and timely dissemination of events within the University.
Prof. Egbewole, however, reaffirmed the commitment of the University management to sustaining a cordial relationship with the Union, urging it to spotlight areas requiring improvement in media engagement and ensure that its members carry out their duties diligently and efficiently.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Unilorin NUJ Chapel, Mr Adekola Tijani Adewoyin, explained that the forthcoming workshop was designed to provide a platform for knowledge exchange and capacity building in response to the rapidly evolving landscape of journalism in the digital era. He said that participants will include members of the Chapel, staff of the Directorate of Corporate Affairs, University of Ilorin and selected media professionals from various NUJ Chapels in the state.
Mr Adewoyin noted that the new leadership of the Chapel was committed to exploring opportunities for collaboration and with the University management to further enhance the reputation of the institution globally.
While commending the Vice Chancellor’s leadership and support for staff capacity development, particularly in leveraging Artificial Intelligence for professional growth, the NUJ Chairman added that the Chapel would be honoured to have the Vice Chancellor declare the Workshop open on the first day of the programme as the Chief Host.
The Vice Chancellor was joined to receive the UNILORIN NUJ delegation by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Adegboyega Adisa Fawole, and the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Technology, and Innovation), Prof. Muhtar Adeiza Etudaiye.
On the NUJ Chairman’s entourage were the Union’s Assistant Secretary, Mr Abdulquadri Abubakar, the Financial Secretary, Mr Felix Dare Afolabi; the Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun; the General Manager of UNILORIN FM, Mr Idris Akintola Ibrahim (Alooma); the Assistant Director, Mr. Abubakar Imam; and the Assistant Director (Protocol), Mr. Segun Alabi, among others.
