UNILORIN @ 50 no longer an ordinary event – Mokuolu

By Abubakar Imam

The Chairman of the University of Ilorin Golden Jubilee Anniversary Planning Committee, Prof. Olugbenga Ayodeji Mokuolu, has said that with what happened at the University award ceremony held penultimate Wednesday (July 18, 2025), the upcoming anniversary is “no longer an ordinary event.”

Prof. Mokuolu stated this last Tuesday (July 22, 2025) while adressing the 16th meeting of the Committee held at the Board Room of the Academic Planning Unit.

The renowned Professor of Paediatrics and Child Health said that the award ceremony has generated more interests and desires for greater involvement, particularly among alumni and retired staff of the University.

Prof. Mokuolu commended the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, and members of the Award Planning Committee for ensuring that the ceremony was colourful.

He explained that the well-organised award ceremony should be seen as a challenge to the Anniversary Committee to organise a better event.

Prof. Mokuolu noted that from the responses he has gathered he was convinced more than ever before that alumni of the University would be more encouraged to participate in the forthcoming anniversary if granted one recognition or the other by their alma mater.

A Sub-Committee under the leadership of the Director of Advancement Centre, Prof. W. B. Yahya, was subsequently constituted to ensure the mobilisation and recognition of more alumni and ex-staff members, particularly former Principal Officers of the University, on the date set aside for the Alumni Colloquium.

Other members of the Sub-Committee are the Director of the Centre for International Education (CIE), Prof. Lateef Onireti Ibraheem; the Ag. Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Alex Morenikeji Akanmu; the Deputy Editor, UNILORIN Bulletin, Mr Abubakar Imam; and the new President of the Student Union, Mr Idris Ayomo Adelu.

The Chairman charged the Sub-Committee to go all out to fetch out names of outstanding individuals whose careers intertwined with the University in the last five decades for possible appropriate recognitions, saying that doing so would add a lot of colour to the event.

Prof. Mokuolu, who thanked members of the Committee for their cooperation so far, urged them to be thoroughly professional in the organisation of events so as to ensure that times and opportunities are effectively utilised for maximum impacts.
