UNILORIN Alumni Spotlight is on Abideen Opeyemi Olasupo – Class of 2017!

Mr Abideen Opeyemi Olasupo is the Founder of the Brain Builder Youth Development Initiative, Opab Gas Station, and FactCheck Africa.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Ilorin, and has pursued executive education in Non-Profit Management at the Lagos Business School and Entrepreneurship Essentials at Harvard Business School, United States.

Olasupo is the visionary behind FactCheck Africa, and was one of only 20 global leaders selected for the 2025 AI Journalism Lab Leadership Cohort hosted by the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York. He developed MyAIFactChecker, Africa’s first AI-powered fact-checking platform designed to combat the growing threat of misinformation and disinformation across the continent.

Another innovative solution he developed is HerSafeSpace, an AI-powered WhatsApp chatbot providing support to survivors of Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV) across West Africa. The chatbot currently operates in Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Cameroon.

Olasupo’s work has been widely recognised and featured by Forbes, BBC, Al Jazeera, Channels TV, TVC, TheCable, Premium Times, and several other leading media outlets.

He was honored with the Gani Fawehinmi Integrity Award after voluntarily refunding $2,397 mistakenly paid by an organisation he consulted for, a testament to his commitment to ethical leadership. In 2024, he was selected as a Speaker at the One Young World Summit in Montréal, Canada, where he shared the stage with global leaders, including the Prime Minister of Canada.

He has also consulted for numerous international organisations, including CIVICUS (South Africa), Project Everyone (UK), Restless Development (UK), Meta, among others.

Mr Olasupo has the honour of being the 50th individual to be featured in the UNILORIN Alumni Spotlight series, which commenced on Friday, May 24, 2024. Interestingly, this milestone coincides with the university’s upcoming 50th anniversary celebration, taking place from 23rd to 28th November 2025.
