The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to supporting the Linguistic Immersion Centre (LMC) while strengthening its operations for the benefit of students and the wider community.
Prof. Egbewole gave this assurance last Thursday (July 10, 2025) while receiving the Director of the LIC, Prof. Badmas Olanrewaju Yusuf, and his team, who paid him a courtesy visit in his office.
Addressing the delegation, the Vice Chancellor acknowledged some of the challenges faced by the Centre but expressed optimism that the experiences gained would ensure smoother operations going forward.
He urged the students under the Centre’s programmes to return for their degree and Master’s studies, assuring them of continued support and a welcoming environment.
“I believe the challenges we navigated were just part of the transition. Now that you are here, things will be a lot smoother. We want this relationship to continue, and I hope you will stay in touch and help spread the word to your friends, brothers, and sisters”, the Vice Chancellor said.
Prof. Egbewole further noted that the University had made adjustments to its rules to accommodate the students, in line with its principle of being “our brothers’ and sisters’ keeper.”
He added that the Centre would soon adopt a more pragmatic approach to improve its processes and attract greater enrolment.
Earlier, Prof. Yusuf thanked the Vice Chancellor for his continued support, which he said made it possible for the students to visit KWASU, Al-Hikmah University, and UNILORIN FM to experience the community’s academic and media landscapes.
The Director, who teaches at the Islamic Studies Unit in the Department of Religions, appealed for more support and approval of the Centre’s requests to assist students.
Prof. Yusuf specifically appealed to the Vice Chancellor to endorse the Centre’s proposal as a mark of his support for the LIC, which caters for the linguistic and cultural integration of non-English speaking students who are mostly indigenes of Francophone countries.
Other principal officers who were present during the visit included the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Moji Taibat Segun Bakare-Odunola; the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), Prof. Muhtar Adeiza Etudaiye; the Registrar, Mr Mansur Adeleke Alfanla; the Director of the Centre for International Education, Prof.Lateef Onireti Ibraheem; the Deputy Director of LIC; Dr. Segun Ojelabi; Mrs Azeezat Ibrahim of the Vice Chancellor’s Office; and students of the LIC.
