By Mustafa Abubakar

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole (SAN), has commended the newly elected leadership of the Students’ Union as he appreciated the peaceful and credible transition process that produced them.

Prof. Egbewole gave the commendation last Friday (June 27, 2025) while receiving the new Central Executive Council (CEC) members of the Students’ Union, which was led to his office by the Ag. Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Alex Akanmu.

He expressed gratitude to God and praised the resilience, collaboration, and maturity shown by all parties involved during the electoral process.

The Vice Chancellor specifically congratulated the incoming President and his team, urging them to embrace inclusivity in administration, which he described as the key to their success.

“There are many ways to consult and get the right direction in leadership”, the Vice Chancellor said, encouraging the President-elect to work closely with his Executive Committee members and ensure unity among them.

Prof. Egbewole also advised the new student leaders to make good use of the experience of the Vice President (Permanent Site), Ganiyu Rahmat Bukola, who served in the last executive.

He emphasised the need for collaboration, especially with the Ag. Dean of Student Affairs, whom he described as not only a former Students’ Union President but also a capable hand in student governance.

While assuring the new team of the University management’s continuous support, Prof. Egbewole charged them to uphold the legacy of the outgoing administration and fulfill their campaign promises.

“I followed your campaigns closely and I look forward to seeing the actualisation of your promises”,  he added.

The Vice Chancellor further described student unionism as a thankless task, but one that carries its own reward.

“You must remember that you asked for this position, and you must be ready to accept both praise and blame from supporters and critics alike”, he said.

He also appreciated the outgoing President, Comrade Victor Oghenetega Agezeh, for his service and the projects delivered during his tenure.

Speaking earlier, the Ag. Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Akanmu, expressed appreciation to the University management for its consistent support.

He noted that although the election had its challenges, lessons have been learnt and will guide future electoral exercises.

Dr Akanmu particularly commended the Chairperson of the Students’ Electoral Commission, Miss Peace Dina, for her firmness and leadership during the election process. He revealed that the inauguration of the new executives would hold two weeks after the ongoing examinations and sought the Vice Chancellor’s presence at the session.

Earlier, in his remarks, the President-elect, Mr Idris Adelu Ayomo, thanked the University management for its support and pledged an inclusive administration focussed on unity and progress.

He also promised to work collaboratively with the management to make the institution better than he met it.

“I will continue the open-door policy of the outgoing administration and ensure every campaign promise is turned into visible actions”, he said.

Accompanying the President-elect during the visit were the outgoing President, Mr Agezeh, and other newly elected members of the  Central Executive Council (CEC), including Ganiyu Rahmat Bukola, Vice President (Permanent Site); Ibraheem Azeezat Oyindamola, Vice President (College); Alaafin Kaosarat Ajoke, General Secretary; Akano Priscilla Moyinoluwa, Assistant General Secretary; Akinlade Abraham Oluwasegun,Financial Secretary; Abiola Idris Olaoye, Social Secretary; Ahmad Olumide Musa,Welfare Secretary; and Miss Peace Dina, Chairperson, 38th Students’ Election Commission
