Unilorites warned against exam malpractices

A Professor at the Department of Mathematics, University of Ilorin, Yidiat Omolade Aderinto, has urged students of the University, particularly those of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, to steer clear of examination malpractice, warning that such offenses could lead to expulsion from the institution.

Prof. Aderinto gave this advice last Wednesday (June 18, 2025) while speaking at the Faculty’s Examination Sensitisation Talk organised by its Quality Assurance Committee at the Faculty’s Board Room.

            The event was themed “Consolidating the Quality of Our Examination Process: Review of the Roles of Stakeholders.”

The don stressed the importance of upholding academic integrity and encouraged students to adhere strictly to the University’s examination guidelines. She said, “Enter the examination hall 30 minutes before the start of the exam, come with a valid ID card and course registration form, sign the attendance register, and avoid entering with any electronic device.”

She further cautioned against impersonation, saying, “Never write exams on behalf of another person. You borrowed your surname, it doesn’t belong to you. Build it right.”

Prof. Aderinto also reminded students to comply with the University of Ilorin’s dress code, emphasising that discipline in conduct and appearance contributes to the institution’s image.

Addressing other stakeholders, Prof. Aderinto called for commitment to credibility and quality assurance in the examination process.

She urged staff to prevent exam leakages by ensuring that only authorised personnel handle sensitive materials. “Ensure excellence in service delivery,” she said, appealing to level advisers to be more accommodating towards students.

In his opening remarks, the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Ganiyu Amuda-Yusuf, commended the efforts of the Quality Assurance Unit for its dedication to institutional development and educational standards.

The Dean encouraged staff to continue to contribute meaningfully to the actualisation of the Vice Chancellor’s  agenda for the University.

Prof. Amuda-Yusuf also charged students to share key takeaways from the event with their peers who could not attend.

In his welcome address, the Chairman of the Faculty’s Quality Assurance Committee, Dr S. A. Olaniyan, reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to enhancing academic excellence.

He noted that the decentralisation of Quality Assurance activities to Faculties and Departments allows for more effective checks and feedback mechanisms.

“We must ensure that all graduates of the University of Ilorin leave with the right values and are impactful wherever they go,” he said.

Also speaking, the Director of the University’s Quality Assurance Unit, Prof. AbdulRazzaq AbdulMajeed Alaro, mni lauded the introduction of lecture-free weeks by the University’s management and commended the Faculty for using the period productively.

 “Quality is what sets a University apart,” he said, urging both staff and students to play their parts in maintaining Unilorin’s reputation as a topnotch institution.

Also speaking, the Sub-Dean of the Faculty, Dr S. B. Oladimeji, thanked all stakeholders for their participation and encouraged students to remain disciplined and focused in all their academic pursuits.

            The sensitisation event was attended by Heads of Departments, Faculty members, and students.
