Unilorite shines at CITN debate contest

A 300 level student of the Department of Accounting, University of Ilorin, Miss Sukurat Adetunji, has emerged as the 2nd runner-up at the 27th edition of the annual tax debate competition, organised by the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) as part of activities marking its annual conference. The event took place penultimate Thursday (May 15, 2025) in Abuja and it was attended by distinguished tax professionals from all over Nigeria and beyond.

            Miss Adetunji, who participated in the competition along with several of her colleagues from different universities across the country, came third at the end of an exciting debate contest, which centred around tax and related issues.

            In recognition of her excellent performance, Miss Adetunji was rewarded with a cash gift of ₦100,000:00 and certificate of participation. The Department of Accounting was also presented with a desktop computer by the organisers who expressed excitement with the fascinating quality of knowledge, courage and eloquence displayed by the UNILORIN student and her colleagues from other schools including Mr Joshua Korede Titilayo of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, and Mr Mohammed Kola Alaran from the Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, who took the first and second positions, respectively.

            In a chat with UNILORIN Bulletin, Miss Adetunji thanked the University for the knowledge and courage inculcated in her, which propelled her participation and eventual success.

            She promised to continue to be a pride to her Department, Faculty and the University at large.

            Also speaking, a former Head of the Department, Prof. Khadijah Adenola Yahaya, thanked the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, and the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. A. R. Gbadeyan; as well as the Head of the Department, Dr S. Abogun; for always encouraging and facilitating quality service delivery.

            Prof. Yahaya, who is the current 300 Level Adviser of the Department of Accounting and the staff that accompanied Miss Adetunji to the contest, commended the Unilorite for her brilliant and courageous performance, saying that she was very proud of her.             The don encouraged other students of the Department and the University at large to emulate Miss Adetunji by giving total focus to their studies for them to always excel and do their parents and various communities as well as the University proud.
