UNILORIN FM trains over 500 students — Alooma

More than 500 students have gone through the tutelage of the UNILORIN FM Radio as student volunteers since the inception of the campus radio station a little over 15 years ago.

This was disclosed by the Station  Manager of the radio FM, Mr Idris  Akintola Ibrahim (Alooma), during an interaction with 400-level students of the English Department that visited the radio studio penultimate Thursday (May 15, 2025).

The students, led by Owati Idowu Precious, visited the radio station to gain practical insights into journalism as required in one of their courses,  Fundamentals of Journalism (English 440).

Mr Alooma encouraged the students to seize the opportunity to acquire valuable skills in broadcasting and journalism through the UNILORIN FM Radio and advance their ambitions in life, highlighting the radio station’s impressive track record of training students, volunteers, interns, and freelancers who are excelling in the various media organisations they work with after their graduation from the University.

Pointing out that the students can receive training in various areas, including programme presentation, news casting, production, marketing, and news reporting, the Station Manager also emphasised the importance of exploring emerging fields like blogging, podcasting, and professional skit making, which can lead to financial success and influence.

Mr Alooma invited the students to submit proposals, either individually or in groups, and suggested they could serve as Departmental or Faculty representatives/correspondents for the radio station.

The leader of the student delegation, Owati Idowu Precious, expressed gratitude to the UNILORIN FM management for the warm reception and insightful lecture.

She said this development is a significant step towards empowering University of Ilorin students with the skills and knowledge required to excel in the media industry.

She added that the partnership between UNILORIN FM and the Department of English showcases the radio station’s commitment to nurturing young talents and shaping the next generation of media professionals.
