UNILORIN NASU advocates digital training for members’ career advancement

By Mustafa Abubakar

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU), University of Ilorin Branch, has identified acquisition of digital capabilities as an essential tool for career progression.

Speaking at a seminar  organised by the Association for members preparing for promotion, penultimate Monday (May 15,2024), the Chairman of the Association, Mr Haruna Ibrahim Suberu, said that it is important for every member of the Association to develop themselves, particularly in digital literacy.

The Chairman explained that the initiative was aimed at equipping members with relevant knowledge and skills for improved performance.

Mr Suberu emphasised the need for continuous training of non-academic staff to align with the University’s vision of digitised operations and efficient service delivery.

“We invited experts from the Human Resources Department and collaborated with the ICT units to provide practical guidance for our members. It is part of our broader effort to support career growth and ensure our members are not left behind in the University’s digital shift,” he said.

The Chairman also encouraged members to pursue academic and moral excellence, noting that career progression depends on meeting set standards and acquiring additional qualifications where necessary.

He also urged the University management to institutionalise regular capacity-building programmes to keep staff up-to-date with modern administrative practices.

Mr Suberu  also urged members to prepare adequately for the forthcoming promotion exercise and attendant higher responsibilities, which may require greater use of technology.

Speaking earlier, Mr Raphael Segun Abegunde of the Department Human Resources Unit urged members of the Association to always prepare adequately for challenges in the work environment including examinations, saying that they must remain calm at all times.

“Examinations are not a do-or-die affair. Members should not panic or fear failure,” Mr Abegunde advised.

He emphasised the importance of mental preparedness and strict adherence  to the rules, adding that the seminar was designed to equip members with the skills and confidence needed for success.
