The Management of the University of Ilorin has installed solar power equipment at the studio of the UNILORIN FM to facilitate uninterrupted services for the better-by-far campus radio station.
The equipment was handed over to the management of the radio station last Thursday (March 13, 2024) by the Director of Works, Engr Ramoni A. Amoo.
In his remarks during the brief handover ceremony, Engr. Amoo, representing the University Management, commended the staff of the Directorate of Corporate Affairs and UNILORIN FM for their cooperation and support during the installation process. He emphasised the importance of responsible maintenance and usage of the solar power system, urging the staff to ensure its longevity.
Engr Amoo further charged the staff of the radio station to be good stewards of the valuable resource and urged them to work together to ensure that the investment benefits not only UNILORIN FM but also the entire University community.
While appreciating the management of the University, the Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun, noted that the installation of the solar power system is a testament to the University Management’s commitment to sustainability, adding that “the promptness with which the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, acceded to the Unit’s request for a solar power system for the FM radio station is characteristic of Prof. Egbewole’s service excellence.”
Mr Akogun promised that the radio station would utilise the new equipment efficiently and effectively and appreciated the University Management’s tireless efforts in ensuring that every unit of the University receives the necessary support to thrive.
He said, “This solar power system will not only reduce our reliance on fossil fuels but also provide a reliable source of energy for our broadcasting operations”, adding, “We are grateful for this visionary leadership and look forward to continuing to serve the University community with undiluted excellence.”
In his remarks, the Project Contractor, Mr Abdulsalam Umar Faruk, expressed delight hearing from the end users that they will make judicious use of the gadgets and take proper care of the equipment.
On his part, the General Manager of UNILORIN FM, Mr. Idris Alooma said the staff of the station are “proud to be part of an institution that prioritises the well-being of our planet.”
Mr Alooma affirmed that “the initiative will not only reduce our carbon footprint but also serve as a model for other institutions to follow”, adding that “with a reliable source of energy, we can now focus on delivering high-quality programming to our listeners without interruptions”.
The Station Manager assured the radio listeners that “this upgrade will also enable the station to expand its broadcast range and explore new opportunities for community engagement. We are grateful for this investment in our station and look forward to making the most of this new technology.”
