The Postgraduate School, University of Ilorin, witnessed a remarkable milestone last Monday (July 28, 2025) as General Orisamolade Stephen Ola (rtd), a 72-year-old native of Ondo town in Ondo State, successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis in Mathematics.

            This feat is a testament to the  commitment of the University to academic excellence and its dedication to fostering a culture of learning that transcends age boundaries.

            As Gen. Orisamolade defended his Ph.D, he beamed with smile and pride, declaring that he had finally fulfilled a lifelong dream. His journey to this moment was not without its challenges, but his interest in Mathematics, which began in his childhood, drove him to pursue his goal with unwavering determination.

            The academic journey of the septuagenarian is a remarkable one. He told UNILORIN Bulletin that after attending several primary and secondary schools, he proceeded to the University of Lagos to study Mathematics for his first degree. He later joined the Nigerian Army in 1975 and rose through the ranks to become a General, retiring in 2010.

            After his retirement, Gen, Orisamolade enrolled for his Master degree at the University of Lagos, which he completed in 2017. He then chose the University of Ilorin for his doctoral programme. He attributed this choice to the reputation of the University for academic excellence and the virtues of its staff.

            He expressed gratitude to his Supervisor, Prof. Kamilu Rauf of the Department of Mathematics, for his guidance and support throughout his research.

            Gen. Orisamolade’s achievement serves as a powerful reminder that there is no age limit to seeking knowledge and pursuing one’s dreams.

            Also speaking with UNILORIN Bulletin, the Dean of the Postgraduate School, Prof. Bamidele Victor Owoyele, expressed excitement over Gen. Orisamolade’s achievement, noting that it was a testament to the commitment of the University to providing academic opportunities for all, regardless of age or social status. Prof. Owoyele said that “the University’s goal is to help individuals attain their academic aspirations, and Dr Orisamolade’s success is a shining example of this mission in action.”

            Prof. Owoyele said, “As the University prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary, Gen. Orisamolade’s achievement is a significant milestone that highlights the institution’s excellence in academics and its alignment with global practices.”

            According to the Dean, the ability of the University to break barriers and push boundaries is evident in its willingness to accommodate students of all ages and backgrounds.”

            Prof. Owoyele explained that the Postgraduate School has produced over 15,000 Ph.D. graduates in the last 15 years. He encouraged others to pursue postgraduate studies, emphasising that it is a crucial step in nation-building and personal development.

            On his part, Prof. Rauf, who supervised Gen.  Orisamolade’s thesis, described the achievement as a remarkable milestone, noting that the 72-year-old graduate’s commitment, dedication, and focus were instrumental to his success.

            Prof. Rauf advised young scholars not to relent in their pursuit of knowledge, citing Gen. Orisamolade’s extraordinary performance during his defense as an inspiration to others.

            The don, who is also the Director, Unilorin Directorate of Computer-Based Test (CBT), said, “Gen. Orisamolade’s story serves as a powerful reminder that age is not a barrier to achieving one’s goals”, pointing out that despite facing setbacks, including the loss of his wife, he remained determined to complete his Ph.D. programme. His achievement is a testament to the human spirit’s capacity for perseverance and dedication.”

            Prof. Rauf, who is also the Chairman, UNILORIN Certificate Screening Committee, stressed further that the commitment of the University to academic excellence is evident in its postgraduate programmes and quality of all levels of graduates it has produced, especially at the postgraduate level.

            He said, “As Gen. Orisamolade embarks on this new chapter in his life, his achievement serves as a beacon of inspiration to others, adding that “his story demonstrates that with determination and hard work, anyone can achieve their goals, regardless of age or background.”

            Prof Rauf said that the commitment of the University of Ilorin to fostering a culture of learning and academic excellence has created a platform for individuals like Gen. Orisamolade to thrive.
