UNILORIN Alumni Spotlight is on Mujeebat Bashiru – Class of 2014!

Dr. Mujeebat Bashiru, recently earned her PhD in Applied Chemistry in 2024 from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, and her research focused on developing ionic nanomedicines for cancer treatment and biocompatible hydrogels for drug delivery applications. She worked under the supervision of Dr. Noureen Siraj.

Dr. Bashiru’s work has driven significant advancements in drug discovery, development, and delivery while contributing to diverse fields such as health, drug delivery, forensics, and environmental applications.

Throughout her PhD journey, Dr. Bashiru mentored undergraduates and high school students, collaborated with distinguished researchers, published 13 high-impact papers in peer-reviewed journals, contributed to a book chapter, and presented her work at national, state, and regional conferences. She also served as a judge for science exhibitions and peer reviewer for various scientific journals. Her outstanding research earned her numerous awards and recognition from her department and university.

Dr. Bashiru is a Fellow of the Mobile Institute for Scientific Teaching, USA, and an active member of professional associations such as the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the Society for Thermal Medicine (STM).

Prior to her PhD, Dr. Mujeebat Bashiru earned a master’s degree in chemistry from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (2020) and a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry with Second Class Honors (Upper Division) from the University of Ilorin (2014), Nigeria. Her academic journey at Unilorin was guided by esteemed mentors, including Prof. Nasiru Abdusalam, Prof. Ezekiel Odebunmi, Prof. Gabriel Olatunji, Prof. Lamidi Usman, Prof. Omotayo Olutola Dosumu, the late Mr. Olabanji Adebayo, and Prof. Hussein Kehinde Okoro who was her academic Level adviser among others.

During her undergraduate years, she demonstrated exceptional leadership skills while serving as Vice President of the Student Chemical Society of Nigeria (SCSN), Unilorin chapter (2013–2014), and was fondly called “Ebony.”

Beyond academics, Dr. Mujeebat Bashiru is happily married to Olakunle Durosomo who is also an alumnus of the University of Ilorin, and they are blessed with two children.
