Two 300-level students of the Department of Food Engineering, University of Ilorin, Abdulganiyu Amina and Folorunsho Moses, have won the maiden edition of the Nigerian Institution of Agricultural Engineers (NIAE), Kwara Chapter, Inter-Tertiary Institution Quiz Competition.

In a thrilling contest held penultimate Thursday (May 8, 2025), the “dynamic duo” outshone their counterparts from other leading institutions across Kwara State to clinch first place and a cash prize of ₦100,000.00, securing their position at the pinnacle of academic excellence in the field.

The competition, aimed at fostering knowledge-sharing, problem-solving, and innovation in agricultural and food engineering, saw keen participation from the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, which emerged first runner-up; Kwara State University (KWASU), second runner-up; and Kwara State Polytechnic, third runner-up.

To emerge victorious, the UNILORIN team successfully tackled questions relating to agricultural and food engineering disciplines, the role of engineers in society, and current affairs.

The champions not only showcased academic brilliance but also exuded confidence, teamwork, and composure under pressure.

Reacting to the victory, the Acting Head of the Department of Food Engineering, Dr Sanusi Mayowa Saheed, who also served as the Team Coach and lead delegate, said, “This victory is a testament to the quality of education and mentorship within the Food Engineering programme at UNILORIN. It also reflects our students’ readiness to lead and solve real-world problems.”

Dr Sanusi further emphasised that the achievement underscores the Department’s commitment to producing world-class graduates and aligns with the University’s Vision 1:10:500 as a center of excellence in research, learning, and community service.

“As the spotlight shines on the champions, their win also inspires a new generation of food engineers ready to transform Nigeria’s agricultural and food systems,” he added.
