Haruna Chiroma possessed B.Tech., Msc, and Ph.D.  He has published over 100 academic articles including ISI WoS indexed journals such as Applied Soft Computing (Elsevier) Q1, PLoS ONE Q1, International Journal of Information Management (Elsevier) Q1, Applied Energy (Elsevier) Q1, Neural Computing and Applications (Springer) Q1, SpringerPLus (Springer) Q2, etc. He is a reviewer for 14 ISI WoS indexed journals with impact factor. Chiroma is an Editor – Telecommunication, Computing, Electronic and Control Journal TELKOMNIKA – (Scopus Indexed), leading Guest Editor in Journal of Optimization (ESCI – WoS indexed) – Hindawi. Volume Editor of an edited book in Green Energy and Technology series (Scopus indexed) - Springer. He has been a technical programme committee member for more than 20 high profile international conferences – Springer, IEEE, etc. H-index as @ 2 January, 2018: Google Scholar 9, Scopus 7 and ISI WoS 5. He was invited by QS world universities ranking body Intelligent Unit in 2017 to evaluate research strength of universities in computer science. Chiroma is presently a lecturer at the Federal College of Education (Technical), Gombe and visiting senior lecturer at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, Nigeria.     

Dr. Abdulsalam Ya’u Gital is a senior lecturer at the Mathematical Science Department of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi, Nigeria. He received his B.Tech., Msc., and PhD in Computer Science from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University and University of Technology Malaysia, Malaysia, respectively. He has published over 50 academic articles in international journals including ISI WoS indexed journals with impact factor such as Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing (Q4), Applied Soft Computing (Q1), IEEE Access (Q1), PLoS ONE (Q1), etc., international conference proceedings and book chapters with renown publishers like Springer.    

The Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin, will hold the 10th Annual M. M. A. Akanbi Public Lecture this Thursday (December 14, 2017).

The Lecture, entitled “To Restructure or Not to Restructure: The New Swan Song of the Nigerian Elites”, will be delivered by Mallam Yusuf O. Ali (SAN) at the Faculty of Law Auditorium by 10.00a.m.

A statement made available to Unilorin Bulletin indicated that the Governor of Kwara State, Dr. Abdulfattah Ahmed, will be the Special Guest of Honour while the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Sulyman Age Abdulkareem, is the Chief Host.

Members of the University Community and the general public are cordially invited.

Theme: Managing Human and Natural Disasters: Strategies, Opportunities and Challenges

Sudden and (un)foreseen19 human and natural exigencies test the capacities of state institutions on one hand and expose the fragility of social cohesion and individual resilience on the other. Much as advanced countries with functional institutions are able to forecast, as much as possible, and respond to natural and human disasters especially those caused by violent conflicts, terrorist attacks, wars and low-intensity conflicts continue to test the resolve and capacity of stakeholders in the management of disasters and their attendant humanitarian crises across the world.

As a country that is living through complex security challenges that have created series of humanitarian challenges, rethinking and exploring novel means of forecasting and responding to human and natural disasters require putting all hands on deck. Mindful of the gains being recorded in Nigeria's war against terror and other forms of disasters arising from violence in some parts of the country, taking a holistic and proactive look at disaster management has become imperative.

The Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ilorin, considers it timely to create a platform of interaction among scholars, administrators and other critical stakeholders in the management of human and natural disasters, cognisant of the broad ramifications that disasters and emergencies have on state institutions and society as attested to during the Ebola Virus crisis of 2014. This is why the Centre opines that in creating a safer and more secure world, the time for town and gown collaboration and inter-disciplinary cooperation is now.

Flowing from the foregoing, the 5th Biennial International Conference of the Centre is hinged on critically taking a holistic look at existing policies, practices and strategies of managing human and natural disasters in the country.
