DR. ABDULLAH JIBRIL OYEKAN

BSc (Eng), MSc, DIC, PhD, FNSChE, MFR.

PROFILE

Dr. Abdullah Jibril Oyekan was educated at two of the best institutions in Nigeria and the United Kingdom – Kings College, Lagos and the Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London. Parading an array of impressive credentials and having garnered decades of vast experience and international exposure at the top echelon in the Federal Civil Service, the Council Chairman possesses proven managerial skills to take the already highly rated University to even greater heights.

A Ph. D holder in Chemical Engineering from the prestigious University of London, Dr. Oyekan’s civil service career took him to the Federal Ministries of Industries, Mining, Power and Steel, Education, Works and Housing, Petroleum Resources, as well Defence, in all of which he made remarkable impacts, leaving his footprints in the sands of time.

Throughout his over 30 years’ stint in service, Dr. Oyekan made his marks in a number of crucial government decisions that led to the establishment of golden-goose projects and formulation of progressive national policies. For instance, he was a critical factor in the setting up of the Kaduna Superphosphate Fertilizer project and the Nitrogenous Fertilizer project. Indeed, he led the Federal Government team that negotiated the contract for the construction of the Nitrogenous Fertilizer Complex at Alesa-Eleme, Rivers State and he was an integral brain behind the incorporation of the National Fertilizer Company of Nigeria (NAFCON) in Eleme.

Also, Dr. Oyekan spearheaded the efforts that resulted in the formulation and implementation of the 6 – 3- 3 – 4 Education System. He headed the team that prepared the first draft of the National Housing Policy. And as Director of Petroleum Resources, the new Chairman of Unilorin Governing Council was instrumental to the review of some obsolete petroleum laws where the applicable fees and penalties had become ridiculously small.

The consummate technocrat had served on the boards of several government parastatals and international organisations. These included the Federal Superphosphate Fertilizer Company; the National Fertilizer Company of Nigeria (NAFCON); the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI); the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN); the African Petroleum Producers Association (APPA); the World Petroleum Congress; the World Energy Conference and the West African Gas Pipeline Project.

Dr. Oyekan has also served as Chairman of the World Petroleum Congress (Nigerian Chapter).  He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers, Fellow of the Petroleum Training Institute, and a holder of the National Award of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).
