Prof Mustapha’s research activities include lakes and reservoir limnology, fish and fisheries of lakes and reservoirs, fish and edible frog aquaculture, fish species conservation, aquatic toxicology and climate change. He has published over 70 journal publications in reputable local, national and international journals, edited conferences and chapters in books. He has also attended seminar, conferences, workshops, training and research fairs locally and internationally. He has supervised more than 150 B.Sc., projects, 10 M.Sc. dissertations and 2 Ph.D. theses. He is currently supervising 5 Masters and 4 Ph.D. students’ dissertations and theses. Prof Mustapha has been a visiting researcher, at Mississippi State University, Starkville, U.S.A, from 2006 to 2007 and Post-doctoral Research Fellow, at Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, Magdeburg, Germany, 2013. He has been awarded several scholarships, fellowships, prizes and grants including, University Undergraduate Scholarships and Best Scholar Award, University of Ilorin, Fulbright Fellowship and Scholar Award, The World Academy of Sciences Postgraduate Fellowship, Tonolli Grant for Research in Limnology, International Society of Limnology, USA, Small grants for theses and dissertations, Association of African Universities, Postdoctoral Fellowship, University of Science, Malaysia, The World Academy of Sciences – German Research Foundation Fellowship for Scientists from sub-Saharan Africa. He is a member of various learned societies and held several administrative responsibilities in the Department, Faculty and University levels including Head of Department. He has been external Examiner and assessor to some Universities in Nigeria and Federal Ministry of Education on Sustainable Development Goals and Capacity Building Programme.

Prof Mustapha was born over 50 years ago in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. He attended G.S.S. Ilorin between 1981 and I986 where he had his O’ Level certificate. He was admitted to the University of Ilorin in 1986 to read Zoology and graduated in 1990. He won the University Undergraduate Scholarships and Best Scholar Award in 1990 and was the best student in his class during his undergraduate. He had his Master’s and Doctorate Degrees also in Zoology, from the University of Ilorin in 1998 and 2009 respectively. His area of specialization is Fisheries, Aquaculture and Hydrobiology. He started his career as a Biology teacher during his National Youth Service in Wukari, Taraba State, between 1990 and 1991. He was employed as a Biology teacher by Kwara State Teaching Service Commission between 1992 and 1999. He was later employed by the University of Ilorin as an Assistant Lecturer (Teaching, Research and Community Service) in the Department of Zoology in June, 1999 and rose through the ranks to become a Professor on 1st October, 2017.

He is a member of the editorial board and reviewer of many peer-review local and international journals. He has been involved in various community services such as Aquatic Resources Conservation Programme, Lakes and Reservoirs Improvement, Preservation and Management Programmes, Member, Science Committee for the Establishment of Muhammad Kamaldeen University, Ilorin, Nigeria among others. His extracurricular activities include playing table tennis, research, reading and visiting places of interests. He is happily married with children.
