Brief Profile of the Sub-Dean

Dr Mutiat Adebanke Balogun is a Senior Lecturer and SubDean of the Faculty of Agriculture. She had her primary and secondary educations at Adeola Model School, Offa (1975 -1981) and Federal Government College, Ilorin, (1981 – 1986) respectively. She proceeded to Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria for her Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) ‘A’ level and Bachelor’s degree program, respectively. Similarly, she attended the University of Ilorin for her Master (2002) and PhD (2013) degrees with an interest in Food Microbiology and Microbial Biotechnology. Her research focus is on fermented foods.

Before joining the services of the University of Ilorin on 16th September 2008, she had worked at the Department of Food Technology, Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Kwara State (1997-2008) where she served in various capacities. She joined the University of Ilorin as an Assistant Lecturer and rose through the ranks to become a Senior Lecturer in 2017. 

As a co-investigator, she has won some grants. These include the Unilorin Laboratory to Product (LAPTOP) grant for commercial production of ginger-spiced kuli-kuli (2018) and three months Research Grant by N.G. Patel (India) to Uka Tarsadia University, Bardoli, Gujarat State, India (2017).

She has held several administrative positions and served in various committees in the University such as Departmental Postgraduate Coordinator (2017-2019), Level Adviser (2012 – 2017), Examination Officer (2012 – 2015), Teaching and Research Farm Security Committee (2016), Farm Development and Implementation Committee (2012 -2018), Dress Code Committee (2010 – 2017), Acting General Manager, University Guest Houses Management Board (2017 – 2019), Technical Committee of Technical and Entrepreneurial Centre (TEC) (2015 – 2019), Convocation and Ceremonials Committee (2014 – 2016) and Timetable and Room Usage Committee (2019 – present).

Dr Balogun has taught and successfully supervised many undergraduate and postgraduate students. She is a member of some academic and professional bodies such as the Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology (NIFST), International Union of Food Science and Technology (IUFOST), Nigerian Society for Experimental Biology (NISEB) and Nigerian Women in Agricultural Research and Development (NiWARD). She attended several international and local conferences, workshops, seminars and training. She has published over 45 papers in reputable local, national and international journals. Dr Balogun is happily married and blessed with a daughter.
