About Faculty of Life Sciences
The Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Ilorin is one of the two Faculties that emerged at the beginning of 2013/2014 academic session from the erstwhile Faculty of Science, a foundation Faculty of the University. The Faculty started with four (4) Departments, namely Biochemistry, Microbiology, Plant Biology and Zoology. However, on 30th April, 2014, the University Senate approved the establishment of the Department of Optometry and Vision Science, which commenced full operations in the 2014/2015 academic session.
Since the emergence of the Faculty, the Faculty has been involved in research development and collaborative research activities. The Faculty of Life Sciences services students from the College of Health Sciences, Faculties of Agriculture, Communication and Information Sciences, Education, Physical Sciences, Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine and the Institute of Education. The Faculty has One hundred and Eight- Four (184 )
teaching and non-teaching staff. The pioneer Dean of the Faculty was Professor A. Sani of the Department of Microbiology (2013-2017), Prof. A.T. Ande, Department of Zoology (2017-2019) and Prof. P.O. Fatoba of the Department of Plant Biology who is the current Dean (2019-to date). The pioneer Faculty Officer was Mr. Leye Oluwole (2013-2017), Mr. M.A. Ajao (2018 to March, 2029), while the current Faculty Officer is Mr. S. Olorunyomi (March, 2019 to date). The Faculty environment is trimmed and beautified with varieties of flowers coupled with the employment of two gardners who maintain the environment. The Faculty has a Committee Room at NSLT 2, and three dedicated lecture halls; LT 1, LT 2 and NSLT 1 fully equipped with AC, Fans, Personnel and Projectors.
The Faculty of Life Sciences is made up of Five (5) Academic Departments namely:
1. Department of Biochemistry;
2. Department of Microbiology;
3. Department of Optometry & Vision Science;
4. Department of Plant Biology; and
5. Department of Zoology
