Laboratory Medicine Clinic

About Laboratory Medicine Clinic

Laboratory Medicine Clinic Comprised of the following Laboratories

Clinical Pathology laboratory

The clinical Pathology unit equally offer extensive services and testing options in hematology, clinical chemistry, endocrinology, urinalysis, coagulation and cytology to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of your animals by veterinary clinicians and researchers.

Autopsy/Necropsy Laboratory

Our Necropsy unit offer comprehensive necropsy services for all animal species including food animals (porcine, bovine, ovine, etc.), companion animals (dogs, cats, horses, camelids, etc.), poultry, zoo/exotics, wildlife and fish to know the cause of diseases or death for teaching, research and services. The section also evaluates tissue samples and other specimen types submitted to the laboratory for diagnostic evaluation. The necropsy section works with the other laboratory sections at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) in cases where additional testing is needed, helping owners and veterinarians determine underlying causes and contributing factors to animal diseases and death. Our histopathology unit in the faculty also provide services to clients with biopsy to help them accurately determine the presence and extent of a disease. We also offer an extensive list of special stains and immune-histochemical stains that allows our pathologists to better diagnose animal diseases.

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Sentinel/ Microbiology laboratory

The AMR Sentinel was established by the Fleming fund grant in Nigeria. In addition to the primary objective of this laboratory on AMR research activities, the lab is involved in unearthing antibiotics resistance. This is because antibiotics are important medicines for treating bacterial infections in both humans and animals. Unfortunately, many of the bacteria which cause these infections are becoming resistant to existing antibiotics.

Parasitology laboratory

The Parasitology Laboratory is a full-service parasite (helminths, protozoans and arthropods) diagnostic lab. Tests conducted include use of FECPAK G2 artificial intelligence diagnostic technique, Direct fecal smears (wet mounts), Qualitative and quantitative centrifugation concentration flotation techniques (simple floatation technique, sedimentation technique, McMaster method), and nematode larvae cultures. Other tests conducted include: Parasite identification - whole parasites, on histological slides, and in a biopsy, KOH digestion of skin scrapings to retrieve ectoparasites and microscopic examination of arthropods (e.g. ticks, biting flies).

Molecular Biology laboratory

The laboratory is involved in various diagnostic and research in microbes (Veterinary and zoonotic importance) and protein-coding genes at the molecular level. We provide trainings and technically assistance to upcoming bioscientists and Veterinarians from various parts of Nigeria.

Major achievement: Our lab was the first in Sub Saharan Africa to submit and publish the first isolate Rabbit haemmohagic disease virus in Sub Saharan Africa in 2020.

Mycology and mycotoxins laboratory

Mycology/ Mycotoxin laboratory in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of University of Ilorin, oversees the daily analyses of samples for presence of fungi, moulds, yeast and mycotoxins.

Virology and Immunology laboratory

The laboratory is involved in various diagnostic and research in viruses of Veterinary and zoonotic importance. We offer services in several serological techniques and virus isolation for livestock industry in Southern and Northern parts of Nigeria as well as Republic of Benin. We provide trainings and technically assistance to upcoming bioscientists and Veterinarians. We offer several community services as contribution to human development.

Major achievement: The lab was the first in Nigeria to isolate and demonstrate the characteristics of Rabbit haemmohagic disease virus among all several other achievements.
