About Department of Zoology

The Department of Zoology is one of the three Departments that emerged in 2004 from the erstwhile Department of Biological Sciences, one of the foundation departments of University of Ilorin in 1976. The Department is re-known for its excellence in teaching and research in animal biology and ecology. Its research findings have informed basic concepts for Agricultural, Medical and Biochemical studies. It has well-equipped teaching facilities; large lecture theatres, teaching laboratories, zoological museum and library. Besides, it is actively involved in the management of a large and fast-growing Zoological garden that houses wide array of wildlife and provides excellent and useful information on biological and environmentally inclined units. The Department conducts outstanding inter-disciplinary research with linkages spreading across faculties of Sciences, Medical Sciences, as well as various National research centres.

The Department is fully accredited by the National Universities Commissions (NUC). The Department also services students from College of Health Sciences, Faculties of Agriculture, Education, Computer and Informational Technology and Sciences. The curricular of the Department cover all the areas of specialization such as Cell Biology and Genetics, Entomology, Fisheries & Hydrobiology, Environmental Biology and Parasitology. Hence, graduates of the Department are equipped with requisite knowledge in Zoology.
