About Department of Optometry & Vision Science

The Optometry and Vision Science programme was established in September 2013, and approved as an academic department under the newly established Faculty of Life Sciences by the University of Ilorin Senate on 30th April, 2014.  The Department commenced with three support staff, and enrolled the first set of 38 students in October 2014 under the founding/ pioneer Head of Department, Prof. M. O. Oriowo. The department runs a six year programme, leading to the award of the Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree in line with the guidelines / stipulations of the Nigerian Universities Commission, the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria and World Council of Optometry. The Department aims at producing competent, skilled and versatile Optometrists / Vision scientists trained in the art of Optometry and Vision Science with emphasis on comprehensive examination of the eye, including refractive conditions and provision of spectacles, contact lenses, low vision or other optical aids, management of minor anterior segment problems that pose no threat to the eye as well as  binocular vision problems and assessment of the eye and visual system for abnormalities, and where necessary to refer appropriately, These graduates will be capable of facing the task of delivering appropriate professional eye-care services, manpower, materials, machinery and other aspects of vision care industry needed in solving ocular and associated environmental problems. Students are exposed to the most modern technology, techniques and tools of eye-care for meeting the needs of the society. The programme trains graduates with sound scientific and professional knowledge and skills to work within and outside Nigeria.
