DEPARTMENT QUANTITY SURVEYING

The Department of Quantity Surveying is one of the five departments that make up the Faculty of Environmental Sciences of University of Ilorin.  The department took off in 2013/2014 academic session.

Introduction and Vision

Quantity Surveying programme is structured to equip the graduates with the requisite academic and practical knowledge to meet the mission which is to educate and train our graduates for sound scientific, technical, entrepreneurial and managerial skills for the control of the project procurement process (cost, quality and time), for the benefit and satisfaction of clients, and the society. In pursuit of this mission, courses have been drawn from other disciplines such as the Physical Sciences, Engineering, Management, Law and Social Sciences as well as other disciplines in the Environmental Sciences.

Courses offered in the Department are categorized into three, namely compulsory, required and elective courses.  Students are expected to take all the compulsory and required courses and some of the elective courses, depending on their area of Interest. For graduation, the student must have taken and passed all the compulsory and required courses as well as the electives with total credit units not less than the minimum specified in the University Academic Regulation. Quantity Surveying programme is marketable in terms of patronage and enrolment.  The products of this department are to be functional and useful and are hopefully to be in demand in national affairs as well as international services.  

Philosophy 

The philosophy underlying Quantity Surveying education is to develop and advance the Science and practice of the profession with emphasis on construction project planning, procurement, cost management and contract administration. Traditionally, the profession of Quantity Surveying is concerned with financial control and probity in the evolution, planning and execution of construction projects.  It is therefore imperative that the degree programme should equip the students with the theoretical background and practical skills to enable them evaluate analytically the cost and management issues of design and construction.  The Quantity surveyor interacts and collaborates with a wide range of specialists’ members of the design and construction team and this call for a multidisciplinary knowledge of other related professions.

The training of the Quantity Surveyor therefore embraces all facets of construction work and management if they are to function effectively as financial managers of the construction industry.

Objectives of the Programme

The objectives of the degree programme in Quantity Surveying include the following:

  1. To train competent graduates who are innovative and versatile with sound knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of the profession in order to provide cost control and management services on diversified construction projects in the public and private sectors.

2. To equip such graduates to handle the management, procurement, monitoring and control of all resources related to the environment.

3. To provide sufficient general knowledge to enable the graduate interacts effectively with the society and the ever changing environment.

4. To produce graduates such that with subsequent industry experience they will become competent practitioner, registrable with the recognized professional bodies of Quantity Surveyors both in Nigeria and worldwide.

5. To positively contribute to high quality research in all aspects of the technology of the built environment.
