Department of Materials & Metallurgical Engineering

About Department of Materials & Metallurgical Engineering

The Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering was established in 2010 in line with the vision of the university to develop programs that would address National developmental challenges and contribute to issues of global applicability. Metallurgical Engineering began at the University of Ilorin as an optional discipline in the Department of Mechanical Engineering right from inception. Considering the unique importance of Metallurgical Engineering in the field of Engineering, it has since grown into a full fledge Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering. The Department went through the Nigerian University Commission (NUC) verification exercise in May 2011 and the program name, Materials and Metallurgical Engineering (MME) was approved.

What we Offer

The growing need for skilled manpower in Materials and Metallurgical industries in areas of design, materials testing, and supervisory roles necessitated the establishment of Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, for award of Bachelor degree (B. Eng.) in Materials and Metallurgical Engineering. The Bachelor degree is awarded to deserving students worthy in learning and character, in three key options currently available in the department options namely: Electrochemistry and corrosion; Metallurgy (ferrous and non-ferrous), and Engineering Materials (composite materials, nanomaterials, and biomaterials). The programme is operated on full time study mode within study duration of five and three academic sessions, for university tertiary matriculation entry (UTME) and direct entry (DE), to 100-Level and 200-Level respectively.

The philosophies of Bachelor of Engineering degree in Materials and Metallurgical Engineering are as follow:

  1. 1. Production of resourceful Engineers with sound academic training and suitably adequate practical knowledge, for sustainability of National policy on industrialization and indigenization of technology.

2. Training on analytical reasoning, creative innovation and entrepreneurship skills for sustainable growth of indigenous metallurgical and materials industries; and self-reliability,

3. Establish synergy between fundamental knowledge of engineering at undergraduate level and industrial work experience;

4. Dissemination of knowledge for establishment of solid foundation for postgraduate education and competence against emerging national technological challenges through research and development.

The main objectives of the programme include production of materials and metallurgical engineers with independent capability to:

1. Ddesign engineering projects and supervise their implementation.

2. Provide required manpower for development and sustainability of indigenous materials and metallurgical industries that are rapidly developing including the Oil and Polymer industries;

3. Exercise original creative thought, maintain good professional judgement and accept responsibility for the consequence of an informed decision;

4. Provide jobs and become self-reliant entrepreneur;

5. Impart training on prudent and professional management of man, materials and machine/equipment without compromise to moral; ethical; legal; and, health and safety obligations; and,

6. prepare younger generation, for further academic studies at postgraduate levels.
