Research Focus of Aquaculture and Fisheries Department

Based on locally available resources, the Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries continues to improve the quality of its research in the field of aquaculture and fisheries. These research areas are pursued by members of the Department;
1. Sustainable Aquaculture
2. Aquaculture Nutrition, Nutrigenomics and Fish Feed Development
3. Fish Disease, Health Management, Ecotoxicology and Parasitology
4. Fisheries Management and Gear Technology
5. Fish Biology and Limnology
6. Fish Processing Technology and Fish Products Development
7. Fish Breeding, Genetics and Biotechnology
8. Fisheries Economics and Extension
These areas of research are critical to our country’s competitiveness. Research into the production of fish feed will assist in the development of easy, nutritious, and safe local fish and fish products. Overall, our findings will improve the quality and safety of local fish and fish products, giving them a competitive edge. The research program on fish feed availability and accessibility is also being developed to give technological pull that could increase backward and forward linkages.
The fishery and fish processing industries may be able to bring the innovation and technology developed through those researches into practice through a triangle collaboration involving the university, industry, and the community. The development of a varied range of fish products based on local resources is expected to increase the value of local fish food in the long run. Research publications in reputable scientific journals, property rights, or patents, as well as technology outputs that may be used by the Fisheries and Aquaculture industry, are all indicators of the departmental faculty’s research quality.
A more focused research program, as well as its supporting activities, are projected to boost the Department’s contribution to national food security programs while also advancing the Department’s international recognition. The Department supports its faculty in forming research partnerships with national and international universities, as well as the Fisheries and Aquaculture industry.
