Historical Background of Aquaculture and Fisheries department 

The Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries was established by the University administration in 2014 after receiving approval from the University Senate and was headed by Dr. Stephen Bolu at the time. Professor L.O. Tiamiyu was named the department's first Head of Department in 2016. In its inaugural accreditation program, the National University Commission (NUC) granted full accreditation to the Department in 2018. The Department graduated its first and second batches of students in 2019 and 2020, respectively, under the leadership of Dr. M. I Abubakar. The Department currently offers a Bachelor's degree program in aquaculture and fisheries (B. Aquaculture and Fisheries), which is becoming increasingly popular in the Country. Dr. W A Jimoh presently leads the department, which has 374  undergraduate students enrolled in her programme.

The Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries takes pride in its hardworking personnel who work in a variety of aquaculture and fisheries-related fields. The exceptional quality of their teaching and research output, which has been published in major international journals, demonstrates this. In the department's practical year training program (PYTP) in aquaculture and fisheries, her students acquire hands-on experience that complements what they learn in class.

Philosophy

The program's guiding philosophy is to provide students with the necessary skills and technical knowledge through a dynamic, flexible undergraduate program aimed at producing experts in the field of aquaculture and fisheries.

Rationale

To produce graduates in various aquaculture and fisheries specialties who are aware of the environmental aspects of difficulties and concerns related to the production of fish and fishery products.

The Vision of the Department

To establish a department that would serve as an exceptional training center for students, professionals, farmers, and interest groups in order to ensure adequate quality protein, food security, and knowledge advancement in Nigeria.

The mission of the Department

  1. To produce skilled personnel in the specialty areas of aquaculture and fisheries,
  2. To train trainers in the fields of aquaculture and fisheries suitable for the tertiary institutions,
  3. To replace the unskilled personnel in commercial aquaculture and fisheries for the sustainable ecosystem,
  4. To produce graduates with an orientation towards self-employment
  5. To produce graduates with sufficient technical, production and entrepreneurial skills in all aspects of aquaculture and fisheries,
  6. To provide up to date and current techniques in aquaculture and fisheries necessary for sustainable production.
  7. To produce graduates in aquaculture and fisheries for the relevant state and federal government establishments.
